Kayaking in Prince William Sound |
|
Kayaking is the highlight of many of our guests’ trips, and our knowledge of Alaska waters is unequaled. Our top-of-the-line kayaks offer superior stability, comfortable back rests and foot braces, lightweight paddles, and comfortable personal floatation devices. You’ll receive personal attention from your skilled guides, maximizing your safety and appreciation of Alaska’s precious natural resources. Below is a beautiful story one of our guests wrote about her experience kayaking with her family.
With hundreds of miles of shoreline, countless calm, secluded bays, and plenty of gradual, pebbly pull-outs, Alaskan waters is a kayaker’s dream – one we got to experience several times during our cruise with Northern Explorer Adventures.
On our first afternoon aboard the Northern Explorer, we anchored at what Captain Al calls “Secret Cove.” It might well be called “Secluded Cove” as we were the only ones there. It was calm, but there was a light mist and the tops of the green mountains were shrouded in clouds. That didn’t stop our group, as we donned layers of warm clothes, rain pants and jackets, hats and waterproof gloves, and secured our phones and cameras in watertight bags. We slid off the swim deck of the boat into the stable kayaks, and began to paddle across the quiet water. It was low tide, and there were several feet of naked rock between the water and the line of lush green foliage on the shoreline. Mussels clung to the rock faces, and our chef spent an hour harvesting some for dinner. As he returned to the boat’s galley to prepare another fresh and amazing meal for us, we slowly paddled the perimeter of the large cove, discovering freshwater streams rushing down to meet the water, and hopefully watching for bears said to live in the vicinity and often seen foraging along the shoreline. Seagulls sat like statues on rocks next to the water, still until we approached, then soaring off, calling to each other as they swooped and dove through the air above us. We floated through a narrow passageway that opened up into a cove within the cove, a peaceful and almost magical spot where the water was so clear and green, I half expected to see a mermaid gliding under my kayak, hair fanning around her, a faint smile on her lips. We returned to the boat, where two of our fellow guests had successfully caught several rockfish – more fresh additions to that evening’s dinner menu. Back on board, we sat in soft armchairs and sipped hot coffee, gazing out the large picture windows, admiring the scenery we had just immersed ourselves in, and dreaming about where we’d go next. Lucky for us, we didn’t have to go far … anywhere in Alaska, the next adventure is always just around the corner. |
